Army Wagons

The Heavy-Duty Escort Wagon
The Army wagon or Escort wagon was usually pulled by 4-6 mules and had a load capacity of 3000 pounds. Perfected and standardized during the Spanish-American War, the Army- Escort Wagon carried military troops, rations and baggage. This heavy wagon is characterized by the flare boards and extensive hand-forged hardware on the box, and the California-style seat risers on the seat.

Siler Army Wagon

1878 4-Mule Army Escort Wagon

The three pictures shown are essentially the same wagon just different styles. This wagon supplied provisions for the troops, anything from food to ammunition to shelter. The unique characteristics are a double tiered jockey box / tool box / foot board, an ax carrier within the wagon, and a shovel carrier under driver seat. (The wagon shown to the right features winged flair boards.) Also these wagons had rough lock chains, a tail gate with a chain retainer to offer rear platform. The wheels were very heavy duty being 54" high and 3" wide. We make these wagons new or restore originals. Below on the left is a restored Army wagon with a custom top and the right picture is a new wagon without the winged flair boards.

Lortz Ambulence Army Wagon

Early 1900's Army Ambulance

This Ambulance has the traditional set up with four stretchers seen on the side of the wagon, two personnel benches that can be folded inside. The top has roll down curtains for privacy. This wagon was developed to for a light easy riding to provide a soft travel for wounded soldiers. We have found that these characteristics are also nice for trail riding. The rear entry with a running board step and tail gate provide easy access and the 5th wheel steering have made this one of our easiest rides. The owner of this wagon incorporated a stainless steel cooler to use under the seats. The wagon bows and top are also easy to remove. This wagon can be pulled by 2-4 animals.
