This is a nice, original condition 600 gallon Studebaker water wagon. The wagon is one of the most complete water wagons we have seen, it was not robbed of any components and has all the sprinkling valves and operator levers, brakes, jockey box, wooden barrel water tank, and full 5th wheel. The 2 sprinkler heads can be controlled independently left or right as needed, the operator also has the ability to rotate the spray stream to cover the board walk. The wheels are 4 1/2in x 52 in x 36 in. For being over 100 years old the tank is in excellent condition and if you want it in working condition we can give you a quote. We would have to put a liner inside the tank some of the wood on the 5th wheel also needs replaced. This wagon came from a well established collection in Ohio.
History of Sprinkler Wagons -
Sprinkler wagons were originally used to "sprinkle" the roads. Before roads were paved shops and homes would become filled with dust with out keeping the ground wet. Another reason for sprinkling the roads was due to healthcare reasons, in the 19th century people people were realizing tuberculosis was contagious and many physicians believed it could be transmitted by dust. The wagons were also used widely as lawn sprinklers.
Operation -
There are two distinct sprinklers, one back of each hind wheel, connected to the tank by a direct discharge pipe. The operation is by means of a slot and valve, controlled by the foot of the driver. The Studebaker sprinkler may be used for the uniform and effectual sprinkling of streets alone, or for street and lawn sprinkling. -Studebaker Trade Catalog
