The Nissen Wagon Works, established by John Philip Nissen in 1834 and located in Forsyth County, NC, was one of the largest wagon makers in the South during the nineteenth century. The wagon box on this Nissen is considered a double box, meaning the upper tier of the box can be removed to change the capacity and carrying size of the box. Overall, this wagon is in very good structural condition. The painting and striping of the box are all original, although the running gear appears to have been over-painted. Wagons with this quality of original paint and original makers name stenciled on side are uncommon and sought after, making this a rare find. The small footprint of this wagon makes it suitable for theming and merchandising displays, as well as limited space exhibits.
