A dedicated group of around 300 riders and over 50 wagons pulled by horses, mules and oxen retraced the original Fort Pierre to Deadwood Trail. Doug Hansen, owner of Hansen Wheel & Wagon Shop, was among the group of wagons. He hitched his restored Abbot Downing Mudwagon to his draft team and headed out on the same trail that this same coach had traveled many years before.
As the sun crested the hills of the South Dakota prairie, our group broke camp and set out across the western plains. With hollers of "Load 'em up and Head 'em out!" we kicked off the 100th anniversary wagon train from Fort Pierre to Deadwood on July 30. We heard a clinking of brass terrets, the swish of leather reins and the clippity-clop of hooves.
