Q & A
Question: How often should I grease my wheels and axles?
Answer: Greasing the axles of your wagon about every 40 miles of use is recommended for wagons with skeins and boxings or buggies with "old-style" axles. It is also a good idea to check the axles prior to using your horse-drawn vehicle after having it stored for a long period of time.
Question: How often should I grease my wheels?
Answer: It is recommended to grease the axles of your wagon about every 40 miles of use, especially for wagons with skeins and boxings or "old-style" axles. Additionally, check the axles before using the wagon after it has been stored for a long period of time.
How to Apply Block Grease to a Farm Wagon Axle
1. Jack Up the Wagon and Remove the Wheels - After jacking up the wheel, and unscrewing the nut (note they are directionally threaded), place the nut where it will not pick up sand or grit. Also, note the leather washers (if applicable), being careful to keep these clean also, and to be sure to put them back on the spindle, close against the collar.
2.Prepare the Block Grease: Using a putty knife, slice approximately 1 tablespoons per wheel.
3. Apply to the Axle: Press the grease onto the axle and spread it evenly around the surface. Cover the area where the hub rides.
4. Reinstall the Wheels: Slide the hubs back onto the axles and to start thread the nuts on by hand to avoid cross threading and then tighten with the wheel wrench.
Maintenance Tip:
Inspect and reapply block grease regularly, especially after long trips, or extended storage.
